Poll: Resources or HR?

So, I’m thinking about two hospitals.

Hospital A has wonderful resources. If your patient needs a medication, you can probably get it (or a generic) for them. You’re not likely to run out of Tegaderm or, say, a specific size needle. But the atmosphere is unpleasant. Doctors and nurses are not particularly friendly, not to each other and not to their juniors.

Hospital B is resource-poor. Medications tend to run out before the next shipment arrives, and equipment is not readily available, but in terms of human relations, it is a pleasure to work there. Doctors who finish their work early will help out in other busier wards.

So the question is, if you could work in only one of these set-ups, which would it be? Feel free to discuss.

  1. Hard decision – but I voted for B

I went with B. Although it is awesome to have everything at your fingertips to treat your patients well (and I am fortunate enough to work in a system where this happens more often than not, at least with the basics), there is a little thing called sanity that is nice to maintain. I think the distress of a poor working environment is worse than the distress of lacking in supplies. At least when you lack things, you can get creative or at least provide a pleasant environment to comfort people the best you can. Poor HR can really sour everything, including the quality of care, even in a well supplied hospital.
Then again, I haven’t worked anywhere that was lacking in basic supplies like antibiotics, syringes or tape, so maybe I would change my mind.

    1. I think you’re right, and I think I feel the same way. I think a pleasant atmosphere is important to suffering patients. Thanks for your input!
