Yay for Top Ten Tuesdays! This week is a rewind, and as (almost) always when we get to choose, I choose quotes. Quotes make me happy, and these are some of my favourites from books I read over the past year. (Two other TTT Quotes of mine: here and here.)
“You can build a whole world around the tiniest of touches.”
Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt
“You thought that if you didn’t tell the stories, the sky would fall on your head.”
Krik? Krak! By Edwidge Danticat
“Because we were not in our country, we could not use our own languages, and so when we spoke our voices came out bruised.”
We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo
“The future is not as loud as war, but it is relentless. It has a terrible fury all its own.”
The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes
“I thought maybe we mourned not only for the dead but also for the living.”
In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner
“History is a Rorschach test, people. What you see when you look at it tells you as much about yourself as it does about the past.”
Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly
“Ultimately, the universe doesn’t care about us. Time doesn’t care about us. That’s why we have to care about each other.”
Every Day by David Levithan
“A dream dirty and bruised is better than no dream at all.”
Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini Taylor
“We thought we had such problems. How were we to know we were happy?”
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
“Operated on one case of appendicitis with inadequate anaesthesia.”
Last Night I Dreamed of Peace by Dang Thuy Tram (as much as I dislike surgery, as an opening line to a journal, this has got to be one of the best)
Tell the Wolves I’m Home (a personal favorite) made my list in a very different capacity. 🙂
I quite like the Atwood quote.
Thank you – it’s one of my favourite books of the year so far (not that I’ve had time to read very many!).
The fact that you read Dang Thuy Tram’s journal makes my day.
It’s a beautiful journal 🙂 and heart-breaking.
Reblogged this on http://www.surajacharya.wordpress.com.
Just beautiful. Great quotes. Lovely presentation.
Here’s my Top Ten: Childhood Favorites.
Thank you!
These are beautiful quotations. And, I love how you presented them. I have to say, I think my favorite is the one from the Handmaid’s Tale.
Thank you so much. Sometimes I get a little carried away. The Handmaid’s Tale quote struck quite a nerve for me as well. In fact, it’s probably one of the few books I would consider re-reading (I rarely re-read).
I love the layout of this post!
I know that sounds generic, but I’m being sincere.
Thank you 🙂 I know you to post sincerely, so I’m not skeptical 🙂
Love that quote by David Levithan. Indeed, we’re just a speck in the universe but we if start to care, we let other people feel that they are the center of the universe.
Glad you like it 🙂
