Top Ten Non-Books

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday with The Broke and The Bookish is all about those things we entertain ourselves with that AREN’T books – namely, series and movies.

I have to admit, I have never been a big fan of television and movies. Movies were only really a social activity for me (a.k.a. dates and girls’ nights out) and I don’t really like television. But as university is wont to do, a lot of that changed. Because what’s better than bingeing on a series when you should be studying? Also, The Boy LOVES movies, and so that is one of our activities together.

My Top 5 Television Series

1. Grey’s Anatomy

I’ll just jump right in with this one because I know I’m supposed to be “above” watching this show, but I LOVE it. I started watching it in my first year and even though there’s a whole lot of drama and a whole lot of doing-medicine-incorrectly, I still love it. I don’t know so much about season 11 though… Grey’s without Christina? I don’t know.

2. House, M.D.

Pretty predictable I guess. I didn’t like the last few seasons though. I loved it until about Season 4. Then it got… lame.

3. Under the Dome

I have only read one Stephen King book and when I heard of this mini-series, I decided to watch it rather than reading the book. It’s fantastic and awful and… I’m beyond excited for Season 2. I just hope it’s as awesome.

4. Bones

Okay, so I stopped watching this a few seasons in because as I so often mention, I’m a huge scaredy-cat and some things in this series are just soooo freaky. But I adore it still. And the books.

5. Orphan Black

This is my latest obsession and by far my favourite of them all – and my thanks go to the blogosphere for introducing me to this gem. Season 3 can’t come quickly enough!

Five of my favourite movies

Just a little selection of movies I don’t mind watching again and again.

1. Maleficent (2014)

Oh. My. G. YES. This was so beyond fantastic. I can’t even.

2. Bambi (1942)

The story goes that this is the first video I could watch from start to finish as a little girl, and that I always cried but insisted on watching it again and again.

One of my favourite parts

3. Juno (2007)

I don’t know why, but this was a pivotal movie, that really made me grow into a better realisation of who I was and who I wanted to be. A lot of people often tell me that I remind them of Juno – except for the whole pregnant thing, that is.

4. The Great Debaters (2007)

I was on my high school debate team and this movie was just pure magic.

5.Dirty Dancing (1987)

Because… amazeballs.

Do you enjoy any of these? What is your favourite way to couch-potate? (Yes, I’m making it a verb.)

I think we would get along like a house on fire;-) love Greys, loved House(till it got lame but watched it anyway…) as for dirty dancing one of my all time faves! I would just add Love Actually to my movie list and I am going to try Orphan Black…

    1. I actually haven’t seen Love Actually! When it came out I was too young to watch it and then I just never got around to it later. Do try Orphan Black – I’m sure you will love it!

I loved this TTT. I would totally recommend you watch a series called Orange is the New Black. It’s about this college educated woman who goes to prison for historic drug offences, it is so funny yet insightful and interesting. Only there are only 2 seasons so not much catching up to do πŸ˜ƒ

    1. I’ve heard of Orange is the new Black but I just wasn’t sure about it. I remember really disliking Weeds and I’m worried it’s like that… But since so many people are recommending it I suppose I could watch the first few episodes to see if I like it!

  3. Cait says:

I really only discovered TV series this year. I know! I’m so late. But I’m really enjoying them. πŸ˜‰ I loooove Supernatural so so much. The freakier the better for me. πŸ˜‰ I really want to see Maleficient too! My sister saw it and absolutely adored it. XD My TTT!

  4. Rachel says:

Haha I love couch-potate! I want to couch-potate very much right now after all of the shows and movies today!

    My TTT: http://confessionsofabookgeek.wordpress.com/2014/07/15/top-ten-tuesday-favourite-movies-and-tv-shows/

  5. I can’t remember my reaction to Bambi, but I have a vivid memory of watching The Fox and the Hound in aftercare at about 5 or 6 years old and being very concerned that the others would see me crying. Then I looked around and saw everyone else crying too…

Also, yes, you should watch Orange is the New Black.

    1. Awww I remember crying in that movie too! Just another one to re-watch…

  6. Grey’s Anatomy!!! It’s so addicting! I used to watch the show when I was younger and during my first semester of college I decided to rewatch and catch up and it was amazing! I sobbed the entire episode during the finale – Christina is probably my favorite character in any tv show or movie I can’t believe I won’t be able to watch her weekly anymore

    1. Haha, I have to say Grey’s has managed to make me cry often too, and I don’t cry a lot for shows or books!

  7. Michael says:

I realize you’re in your final year and Under the Dome is a looooong book. But if you like the show, I recommend giving the book a try (when you’ve got time, of course).

    1. So it’s a good book? I’ll try it out maybe over our summer!

  8. Love Under the Dome, it made my list πŸ™‚

  9. readerbuzz says:

Thanks for sharing all these great titles. I am adding lots to my queue today. I don’t know much about tv or movies myself so I settled for making a list of mood-boosting books: Be-Happy Books.

Not going to lie, I haven’t seen any of those shows! Well, I’ve seen Grey’s but I haven’t watched it in years. I’m not above doctor shows, but for some reason I’m not watching any haha.

    1. Hah, you’re obviously working too hard at med school and having adventures to waste time on TV – kudos to you! πŸ˜€

  11. doctorloony says:

I LOVE orphan black, its AWESOME. I am addicted to Revenge ❀ I am planning to try Grey's Anatomy πŸ™‚

    1. Have you never watched Grey’s Anatomy?? It’s not like medically accurate or anything, but it’s a fun drama to watch. I’ve never heard of Revenge, I’ll check it out!

      1. doctorloony says:

No but I have seen bits and clips here and there and it seems pretty good. Thanks for the heads up on the accuracy, I was actually wondering about that πŸ™‚ Revenge is great and so gripping so you definitely should if you like a good mystery/drama!

  12. Yes to all of your TV picks! I still haven’t seen Maleficent. 😦 But I can’t wait to!

    1. It’s fantastic – I hope you’ll enjoy it!

  13. I looooooove Orphan Black but I am behind on Season 2. Ack, must catch up! I can’t wait to own Maleficent on DVD! Oh, Juno, nice!

    1. The benefit of being behind is that you will have less time to wait for season 3. I feel like I’m dying without it.

  14. I loved House! I too, stopped watching after around season 4, but now that the whole series is on Netflix I will probably have to finish it just for closure. Juno is amazing, and I’m so glad you liked Maleficent! I know so many people who didn’t but I thought it was amazing in its own way. Great list!

    1. Wait, why didn’t people like Maleficent?! I didn’t realise there were people like that…!

      1. I heard a lot of complaints about how she was a woman scorned and they didn’t like that she was “good” initially only to be spiteful because of a man. Which, I mean I see their point but I still think the film was fantastic!

  15. I feel like such a failure because I have barely seen any of these. I’ve seen NONE of the TV shows. I mean, maybe I’ve seen a random episode here or there. But for the most part, nope. I guess part of it is because I’m not into medical stuff >.> But what about Orphan Black? I’ve heard about that everywhere as well! Shouldn’t I watch it? I do think part of my problem is just that I’m in the UK. Ever since I moved here my TV watching practically disappeared. The only thing I’ve been watching is SYTYCD because that’s my one US TV show I love watching during the summer, but I have to hunt it down online in order to even watch it. Lame!

I’ve seen all the movies except The Great Debaters. I’d say my favorite is Juno. Absolutely loved it when I first saw it – from the actors to the soundtrack to everything. I wouldn’t mind rewatching it right now actually! And Maleficient. That was pretty good. I have to be honest and say I was SLIGHTLY disappointed by it just because I wanted more EVIL in it, but that’s just my hidden evil muse complaining πŸ˜›

Anyways, my favorite way to coach-potate, since you asked, is to be on my laptop working on blog stuff! Surprise! πŸ˜‰

    1. Don’t feel like a failure, you do a ton of stuff already! But, yes, you should definitely watch Orphan Black – it’s the one show I’m trying to push onto everyone. I really think you will love it, the lead actress is superb and the plot is just out of this world. Don’t worry, I have to hunt episodes down too, as we don’t have Netflix in South Africa.
Totally agree about Juno’s soundtrack – I still have it and listen to it often. It’s really funny that you wanted more evil in Maleficent – I quite liked the moderate dose.
Blogging things are definitely my favourite too. Just sometimes my brain is too fried even for that!

  16. kelley says:

I loved Maleficent too, that was such an original take on the story and Angelina Jolee was superb. I like to watch House too–he’s such the perfect bastard, I don’t know why I like him.

    1. Yeah, it’s strange – I hardly ever felt sorry for him, and I honestly dislike professors in real life who are like him, but for some reason I still adored him. Mmmh. Must be something psychological to it.

  17. kero91 says:

I watched Bones only once. It was good.
Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  18. TrishaDM says:

I love Grey’s too… Despite that I really shouldn’t love it. I have extremely mixed feelings about the show without Christina too.
I also agree fully with House getting lame around seasons 4/5.
I liked Bones too, but I stopped watching it because of a lack of time and also because of some changes that made me not love the story line as much.

  19. I saw Juno years ago but I remember really liking it. I’ve only seen a few episodes of House but I feel like I should go back and watch them all.

  20. Priya says:

I love your list! Grey’s, Bones – which is gross, I agree, but also adorable, Under the Dome, House, Bambi – the best Disney movie ever, so many childhood memories, Juno, Dirty Dancing! So many of my favourites.

  21. fiza says:

House, Bones, House! I love these series. And Bambi….yes I think I did cry while watching Bambi :3
