I read a lot of medical fiction. I even have some lists about them (fiction and non-fiction, actually). I think I just read one of my favourites: Suicide Med by Freida McFadden, aka Fizzy McFizz. She also wrote The Devil Wears Scrubs, which I reviewed here. In all honesty, I don’t think the blurb doesContinue reading “The Best Med School Fiction I’ve Read”
I hated the selfishness I saw festering in my colleagues. I hated noticing how our passions died, how we began to work just hard enough to get through the day. Dreams clinical and humanitarian prowess fell by the wayside, and we shuffled forward towards that degree like zombies past their expiration dates.
Trying to reduce your finals to a list of survival tips is a slap in the face of the hard work you have done, and will still do.
For the past three years, I have lived in a modified shipping container. So a few years ago a company called TopShell started converting shipping containers into student housing. It is not a completely new concept, but it was pretty novel for South Africa. Now, these containers are butt-ugly from outside! They are this horrible off-green colour that kind of make them look like army barracks. But inside… they are relatively gorgeous.
Before I left high school, I compiled a book with letters and notes from friends and teachers. I still own this book, and it has served its job in reminiscing and inspiration many times. You can all go home now. I win at this contest. You think doing rectal exams on every incoming trauma or abdominal patient is bad? You think dripping all the agitated drunks is bad? A few weeks ago I was asked to do what I believe is the weirdest scut ever. (For the non-medical people outContinue reading “The Worst Scut Ever”

While I like to think that my advice here is broadly applicable, things can and do change all the time. Do be sure to have a look around socialContinue reading “Step by Step: Applying to Med School in South Africa”

You saw it here first: this video clip was made by my sister’s boyfriend while she was studying for her final high school exams about a year ago (he was apparently doing the “moral support” thing, and got bored). I think it is outrageously hilarious – I hope you think so too. Turn on EnglishContinue reading “The Nerd in its Natural Habitat”
